Edward Van Halen's guitars
CHARVEL

Although Edward used Charvel guitars from the very early days, his first official Charvel products are the 2004 EVH Art Series guitars (see the man at work [ gallery 1 | gallery 2 ] by clicking in either one of the galleries). Edward Van Halen with his custom Charvel, back in 1979 The main differences between these guitars and the ones he used in the seventies and early eighties (besides being almost 20 years apart) would be the tremolo unit. Back then, Edward used a standard Strat type trem system while today he uses a recessed Floyd Rose (only lowers pitch) with his patented Drop-D Tuna device. The old model didn't have a locking nut, quite naturally.

The rest is preety much the same: a fast maple neck on a small body and a single high output pickup. Nowadays, these guitars are a result of a close colaboration between EVH himself and Charvel.

The first batch of these guitars were designed by Edward himself, used in the 2004 tour and later auctioned at eBay (starting at $5150 and going up over $10000). There were a lot of VH fans loosing their mind (in the good sense) and spending over $30000 in order to get more than one of these rarities.

Here are some of his Charvel guitars, including the Art Series guitars auctioned:
